Tea at the Lanier House

The Lanier House is a lovely tea house located in downtown Madison, Alabama’s thriving historic district.

When you walk in there’s an immediate wow factor. The decor is a successful intersection of splashy flamboyance and comfortable retreat.

The main event, however, is the food. The Lanier House knows how to do tea—both the drink and the meal.

They pair a different tea with each of the three courses that has been carefully selected to compliment the food. The teas I’ve had are very good in quality and taste and they’ve always been properly brewed.

Afternoon Tea is traditionally a light meal, designed to bridge the gap between lunch and a late dinner. Their portions are small and delicate but as you go through the savories, scones, and then desserts each carefully crafted bite is a treat.

Each month, the menu is thoughtfully curated around a unique theme, making it tricky to offer a single review since the selections change regularly. However, after several visits, I can confidently say that you’ll be impressed by the chef’s talent and creativity. The attention to detail and commitment to excellence are evident in every dish. Some of their past themes have included: Breakfast at Tiffany’sThe Kentucky DerbySweet Home AlabamaWilly Wonka, and Swan Lake. Honestly, I would love to go every month!

Reservations are a must. They have 3 seatings available Tuesday through Saturday:

  • 11:00 – 12:30
  • 1:00 – 2:30
  • 3:00 – 4:30

Understandably, they usher you out when it’s time for them to prepare for the next incoming group but sometimes I wish you could linger a little longer to visit.

The cost is $30/person – a bargain when you consider you get three bottomless pots of tea and a three course meal.

If you want a proper afternoon tea with delicious food and impeccable tea all served in a relaxing atmosphere, look no further than the Lanier House. It’s fabulous!

Cheers!
