Mother’s Day 2014

We continued our afternoon tea tradition for Mother’s Day.

Our theme this year was locally-made food!

Up front on the left are the requisite crumpets served with toppings of lemon curd and locally-made Queen Bee Blueberry Lemon Jam.

My sister made beautiful open-face cucumber sandwiches (front right, bottom tier) and olive nut sandwiches (front right, top tier).  She says the olive nut sandwiches are a Kentucky thing.  She also made roast beef sandwiches (front and center on the table) for a little more hearty fare.

We also had zesty lemon and rosemary hummus on crackers.  You can see them on the left on the back of the table.

From The Marketplace Cafe’ we had:
  • Sweet Chicken Salad – sweet homemade mayo, dried cranberries and salted sunflower seeds) served on locally made Rosemary Fred Bread (center, bottom tier)
  • Spicy White Pimento Cheese – sharp white cheddar, monterey jack, goat cheese, cream cheese, pimento & just a hint of chipotle served on Garlic Herb Fred Bread. (center, middle tier)

Sweets:  Locally made Pizzelle’s Confections chocolates served on the top tier of the 3-tier server that belonged to my husband’s Mother.  You can’t see how pretty it is because it’s covered up with food.

Pizzelle’s chocolates are like no other.  True gourmet style.  The blue candy is called Goodbye Earl and is made with Earl Grey and local honey.  The Sitar has black tea and chai spices.  So appropriate for our tea!  Some of the other flavors infused in the chocolates were lavender, lemon and orange.  I’m not a good enough writer to tell you just how delicious these are.  I highly recommend you go try some for yourself.

Teas:  We served three different kinds served with cream and rock sugar.  Spicy Plum from Tea with Thee by Victoria in the big pot.  The cinnamon really stands out in this strong tea.  We had Piper and Leaf’s Front Porch Special in the pink flamingo tea pot. I normally don’t care for Earl Grey tea but this blend is quite pleasant and mild.  It’s a blend of black teas with delicate notes of bergamot (Earl Grey), jasmine, and spearmint.  In the green frog pot we had green tea – Lung Ching also known as Dragonwell tea.

And of course the whole reason for Mother’s Day…  The mommies!
